Azerbaijani activist is in dire need of medical treatment
Iran Human Rights, 22 January 2014: Dr. Assadollah Assadi Daghdaghan, Azerbaijani physician and civil rights activist who has been sentenced to 5 years in Evin prison is in dire need of medical treatment outside the prison, at a full medical facility. As a result of the interrogation sessions, following his arrest, Dr. Assadi suffers from cervical column arthritis and neurological, coronary, digestive, mouth and dental diseases. Also due to psychological issues sustained from harassment on March 11, 2012 (in Evin prison, he attempted to commit suicide, however, his fellow prisoners came to his aid and saved his life. Dr. Assadi was arrested by security guards on July 14, 2010 (23rd of Tir 1389) while he was at his office.
He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, by Judge Salavati at  branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran. His sentenced was reduced to five years in the Court of appeal. For the first time in three years of consecutive imprisonment which is more than half of his term, Dr. Assadi was given medical furlough from prison. The prison authorities had stated that this furlough was considered an addition to his full release and based on the documents outlining the status of the file, they had guaranteed his release ‘in coming days’. However Dr. Assadi was once again summoned to the prison. The authorities however responded to the Assadi family’s inquiry by claiming that the December 2, 2013 date (11th of Azar 1392) was a ‘typo’ and that in fact the real date of this prisoners release is two year from that date, December 2, 2015.
