Four Prisoners Hanged in Northern Iran, One of them in Public

Iran Human Rights (June 1 2016): According to reports, Iranian authorities recently carried out four more executions, bringing the number of hangings in Iran for May 2016 to at least 68.

According to the state-run publication Khorasan News, a prisoner was hanged at Mashhad Central (Vakilabad) Prison (Razavi Khorasan province, northeastern Iran) on Tuesday May 24. The report identifies the prisoner as "A", 48 years old, hanged on murder charges.

On Monday May 30, an unidentified prisoner was hanged in public at a city square in the city of Nur (Mazandaran province, northern Iran) reportedly on murder charges. According to a state-run news agency, Young Journalists Club, the prisoner was a 40-year-old man and he was executed in front of a crowd of people.

According to close sources, two prisoners were hanged at Noshahr Prison (Mazandaran province, northern Iran) on rape charges on Monday May 30. The prisoners have been identified as Ehsan Lashki and Nasrollah Farrokhnia. These two prisoners were reportedly held in prison for nine years prior to their execution. Iranian official sources, including state-run media and the Judiciary, have been silent on these two executions.
