Iran: Two Men Hanged, Including One With Mental Disorder

Iran Human Rights (IHR); February 23, 2020: Two men were hanged on February 19 at Rajai-Shahr prison, near Tehran. One of them was suffering from a mental disorder.

According to IHR sources, death-row prisoner Mohammad Cheraghi was hanged on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at Rajai-Shahr prison. He was sentenced to death for murder charges.

The second prisoner who was identified by his first name, Mehrdad, was suffering from a mental disorder. He was also sentenced to death for murder charges.

Moreover,  other prisoners, including two Afghan nationals, were transferred to the “safe ward” of Rajai-Shahr prison. “Safe ward” is the name of a ward -more like solitary confinement- which death row prisoners are sent there shortly before the execution.

In 2019, most of the executions in Iran were carried out for murder charges.

According to the Iranian Islamic Penal Code (IPC) murder is punishable by qisas which means “retribution in kind” or retaliation.
