Iran: At least 10 Prisoners Transferred for Execution in Rajai Shahr Prison

Iran Human Rights, April 19, 2020: At least 10 prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement and are scheduled to be executed on Tuesday, April 21, or Wednesday. Iran is one of the few countries implementing executions despite the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to Iran Human Rights (IHR) sources, 10-12 death row prisoners, mainly sentenced to death for murder charges, were transferred to solitary confinement at Rajai-Shahr prison on Sunday, April 19. The prisoners are scheduled to be executed on Tuesday, April 21, or Wednesday.

Some of the prisoners are identified as Mohsen Rezaeian, Alireza Aryaei, Hamidreza Asgharpour Masouleh, Behrouz Hajizadeh and Mostafa Ghiasvand.

Executions in Iran have continued to be carried out even after the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the country.

IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam had previously said, “Executions in Iran have continued to be carried out even after the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the country. It shows the Islamic Republic uses the death penalty as a tool for its surviving.”

According to IHR’s Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 280 people were executed in Iran in 2019.
