Sunday 4 July 2010

Iran Human Rights, July 4: According to reports from Iran, the minor offender Mohammadreza Haddadi (22) is scheduled to be executed in the Adelabad prison of Shiraz on Wednesday July 7. Mohammadreza Haddadi was sentenced to death for an alleged murder he committed when he was under 15 years of age. His execution has been postponed four times earlier.

According to the human rights reporters in Iran, his family has been informed by the Iranian authorities that he will be executed on Wednesday.

His father told VOA earlier today that his son is innocent and that he confessed to the murder because he was promised by three older men who committed the offence that they would give his family 75 million tomans (USD 75000) and that he wouldn’t be executed due to his low age.

Mohammadreza’s lawyer Mr. Mohammad Mostafaei had not been informed about his client’s scheduled execution earlier today.

Iran has ratified the UN’s convention on the rights of the childthat bans death penalty for offences committed under 18 years of age. However Iran is on top of the list of the countries executing minor offenders.

According to Iran Human Right’s annual report on the death penalty at least five minors were executed in 2009 and at least nine minors were executed in 2008 in Iran.

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of Iran Human Rights urged the international community to put pressure on the Iranian authorities to stop execution of Mohammadreza Haddadi and all other minors on the death row in Iran. He said: Iran has ratified UN’s convention on the rights of the child which is legally binding. He added: execution of the minors must have legal consequences for the leaders of the Iranian regime.
