Iran Human Rights, May 20: A father had killed his 18 years old daughter by strangulation, reported teh government news paper Iran today. According to the report the police found the body of the 18 years old in a river near the town of Birjand, with a head scarf around her neck. The girl is identified as Asieh and was 18 years old. The girl’s father who first told the police that his daughter had committed suicide, confessed later that he had strangulated his daughter on Saturday May 17. He told the police that he did it because he was suspicious of his daughter and had warned her not to continue her acts and respect his and her husbands honor. The father is identified as Brat Ali (47) according to the report.

The incidence of honur killings has been increasing in the past years in Iran. The experts believe it is due to the laws included in the Iranian constitution after the revolution of 1979.

For instance Article 220 of the Iranian Criminal Code states, “If a father – or his male ancestors – kills his child, he will not be condemned for a murder". Likewise, article 1179 of the Civil Code states, “Parents have the right to punish their children within the limits prescribed by law.” A father killed his 17 years old daughter in Isfahan last week. Another father killed his daughter in the city of Dezful on April 30.

Thank you for making us aware of these human rights abuses in Iran. I think it is important to put these abuses into context and not to link them to Islam.

My fear is that stories like these will be used by Western authorities to abuse their position of power. I am thinking specifivally about the war on terror - Afghanistan and Iraq where the freedom of women and children was the main argument. As we all know the war led to more civil unrest and consequently a vicious circle of violence. Empowerng groups within is one way to prevent more murders.
Most importnatly a trustworthy foreign policy is crucial for the Iranian people to trust the West. The way things are at the moment I guess "its better the devil you know" so to speak.

      Dear Ziff
      Thanks for your comment!
Our aim is "simply" to create awareness about the situation of the human rights in Iran. We do not wish to link these abuses to islam or any other specific religion. In this specific case and other similar cases (honour killings) we state clearly, what many human rights activists in Iran believe, that is, the implementation of certain laws in the Iranian constitution has contributed to the increased incidence of the honour killings taht we have been observing in the past years.

We don’t belong to a political party or organization and this website doesn’t follow any specific political direction. In our view the human rights should not be compromised under any circumstances. Neither should our policy of "creating awareness" about the human rights situation in Iran. The fact that any story can potentially be abused by anyone who wishes to abuse it, should not make us "silent witnesses" to the human rights violations that we daily hear about. We believe creating awareness about the human rights violations, through an increased engagement of the civil societies around the world, will eventually help the victims.

We hope you will help us to carry out our responsibility in the best possible way.

Thanks again for your comment and looking forward to hear from you in the future.

      Best regards

      Iran Human Rights
