Two Prisoners Executed For Espionage in Tehran this Morning- At Least 62 Executions in Iran Since April 16

Iran Human Rights, May 19: Two prisoners were hanged in Tehran's Evin Prison early this morning.

According to the state-run Iranian news agency Fars, the prisoners were identified as Koroush Ahmadi and Mohammad Heydari charged with "Espionage" and "Moharebeh" (waging war against God) for "Providing sensitive information to the CIA and Mossad (the Israeli intelligence agency)."

Iran Human Rights (IHR) is investigating the background of these prisoners.

Collaboration with foreign intelligence services is a charge commonly used by Iranian authorities against journalists and political activists.

IHR strongly condemns the execution of Koroush Ahmadi and Mohamad Heydari and holds Ali Khamenei, the Iranian Supreme Leader responsible for these executions. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of IHR urged the international community to condemn executions in Iran. Amiry -Moghaddam said: "Today's executions are a part of the Iranian regime's attempts to prevent dissent before the upcoming presidential elections in June. Ali Khamenei knows well that new protests may lead to the fall of his dictatorship." Amiry-Moghaddam added:"Several political prisoners are in imminent danger of execution in Iranian prisons. The international community must intervene to stop these executions."

Since April 16, at least 62 people have been executed in Iran.

Three Prisoners Scheduled to Be Executed at Rajai Shahr Prison Tomorrow

New Executions in Vakilabad- About 500 Executions in One Prison Since October 2012- IHR Urges the International Community to Intervene Immediately

Iran Human Rights, February 24: On February 3, Iran Human Rights (IHR) reported that secret executions in Vakilabad prison had resumed after several months' halt due to international reactions. The executions began in October 2012 and have been taking place on Wednesdays and Sundays every week. On a few occasions there have been three weekly executions. Each time, at least ten prisoners are hanged; on two occasions in November and December, thirty-five and fifty prisoners were executed respectively. The executions take place in complete secrecy, and the phone lines of the prison are cut off several hours before the executions. - Neither the prisoners nor their families and lawyers (if they have them) are informed about the executions in advance.

Tens of prisoners, among them a possible minor, executed on February 10 and 13

Reliable reports from Vakilabad prison indicate that the mass executions are still taking place. IHR has now received more details about the mass executions which occurred on Sunday, February 10 and Wednesday, February 13. According to these reports, at least ten prisoners were executed on February 10, while the number of prisoners executed on Wednesday February 13 was much higher. Most of those executed were convicted of drug related charges. However, a possible minor offender was among those executed on February 13: a young boy who had just turned eighteen and was convicted of murder. According to our sources, the boy was allegedly a minor and under narcotic-induced psychosis when he committed the offence.

Many Afghan citizens among those executed:

IHR has also received reports about a significant number of Afghan prisoners among those executed in the Vakilabad prison in the past few months. The bodies of the executed Afghan prisoners, which were not transferred to Afghanistan, are buried at a section of the Mashhad Cemetery (Behesht-e-Reza) along with the bodies of the other prisoners executed secretly in Vakilabad. This part of the cemetery is monitored by cameras and patrolled by the Iranian security forces. A recent report from BBC Persian supports IHR's reports on execution of Afghans in Vakilabad. On February 23, BBC Persian reported that bodies of five Afghan prisoners, who were executed in Iran, were buried in the Kalafgan district of Takhar Province in Afghanistan. Quoting the families of those executed, the report says that about 80 people from this district have been executed in the last six months in Iran. The report said that 50 bodies were trensferred to Afghanistan while the remining bodies are being kept at cold rooms in Iran.

United Nations must intervene

Based on the new information about the mass executions in Vakilabad, IHR has sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations (UN) to send a fact finding mission to Iran. IHR spokesperson Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: “What is going on in Vakilabad is a massacre. These are arbitrary and unlawful mass executions that must be stopped[…] We urge the UN to send a fact finding commission to Iran immediately and we ask the international community to react. Hundreds or possibly thousands of the prisoners can be executed in the coming months.” Amiry-Moghaddam also urged the Afghan government to follow up the situation of its imprisoned citizens in Iran more closely, saying, “Afghan citizens are among the weakest in the Iranian society. Many of those imprisoned do not have access to lawyers and their execution is violation of international obligations. Unfortunately, the Afghan government doesn't seem to pay much attention to its imprisoned citizens in Iran.”

Overfilled prisons Iranian authorities' motivation for the mass executions?

According to unconfirmed reports, there could be as many as 3,000 death row prisoners in Vakilabad in danger of execution in the coming months. IHR believes that secret executions also take place in other Iranian prisoners. In its annual report from 2011, IHR reported confirmed secret executions in fifteen different Iranian prisoners. One of the reasons for the secret mass executions in Vakilabad and other Iranian prisons is that the prisons are overfilled. According to official Iranian reports, there are 600,000 prisoners in the Iranian prisons. IHR's sources estimate that there are 20,000 prisoners in Vakilabad, though the prison only has the capacity to house 4,000 inmates. According to eyewitnesses, in some of the wards the prisoners have to sleep on the steps and in the corridors. The situation is similar in several other Iranian prisons, and it seems that mass execution of the death row prisoners is one of the solutions Iranian authorities have sought to overcrowded prisons in Iran.

Human rights groups published the first reports on secret executions in Vakilabad prison in 2010. According to the estimates at least 500 prisoners were executed in 2010-2011. Names of more than 100 executed prisoners were published in 2011. The executions halted in 2011 due to international attention. However, the executions have resumed and according to IHR's conservative estimates that about 500 prisoners are executed in this prison since October 2012.

برپایه همین منابع اتهام آنان جرائم مربوط مواد مخدر اعلام شده و قرار است روز چهارشنبه حکم آنان اجرا شود.

این در حالی است که در روزهای شنبه و یکشنبه چهار زندانی در زندان شیراز اعدام شدند. حقوق بشر ایران، جامعه جهانی را به تلاش برای توقف اعدام‌ها در ایران فرا می‌خواند.

طبق گزارش‌های رسیده به حقوق بشر ایران، بیشتر این زندانیان محکوم به قاچاق مواد مخدر بر اثر شکنجه مجبور به اعتراف اجباری شدند و از روند دادگاهی عادلانه برخوردار نبودند.

بطور مشخص حقوق بشرایران از سازمان ملل متحد و کشورهایی که در پیشگیری از قاچاق مواد مخدر با ایران همکاری می‌کنند، می‌خواهد که اعدام‌ها را در ایران متوقف کنند.

حقوق بشر ایران، به زودی گزارش‌های بیشتری در مورد وضعیت این زندانیان منتشر می‌کند.

Iranian Authorities Continue to Terrorize: Young Man's Fingers Amputated in Public - IHR Urges International Community To React

Iran Human Rights, January 24: Iranian authorities' campaign of conducting public, medieval punishments continues. A state-run Iranian news agency reported that the amputation sentence of a prisoner was carried out in public today in the city of Shiraz (southern Iran).

According to the report, the prisoner was a 29-year-old man, identified as "A. S. H." He was sentenced to amputation of four fingers on the right hand and three years in prison and 99 lashes for engaging in an "immoral relationship".

The Chief Prosecutor of Shiraz warned that similar sentences for several other prisoners will be carried out in the near future.

Iranian authorities have increased the implementation of public sentences, like lashings, executions and amputations, in recent months. Two young men were hanged publicly on 20 January for allegedly taking part in a mugging in Tehran.

Iran Human Rights condemns today's barbaric public punishment and urges the international community to react. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of IHR said: ”It seems that the Iranian authorities' campaign of terrorizing people through public, medieval punishments has no limits. Unless the international community displays a strong reaction, Iranians, especially children, will be forced to witness more public hangings, lashings and amputations— especially as the June 2013 Presidential election nears."

Amiry-Moghaddam continued: "We urge the UN, EU and all countries with diplomatic ties with Iran to condemn these barbaric punishments immediately. The Iranian leadership, among them The Supreme leader Ali Khamenei and the Head of Judiciary Larijani must be held accountable for these crimes."

23 ژانویه‌ 2013: نیروهای امنیتی روز جمعه ۲۹ دی ماه‌ پنج زندانی عرب اهوازی اهل خلفیه(رامشیر) را از زندان کارون اهواز به مکان نامعلومی انتقال داده‌اند و خانوادەهای آنها بیم آن دارند که این افراد را جهت اجرای حکم اعدام از بند عمومی زندان کارون خارج کردە باشند.

احکام اعدام این پنج فعال مدنی، که در ماە ژوئن بەمرگ محکوم شدە بودند از سوی دیوان عالی کشور تائید و روز چهارشنبە نهم ژانویە به خانوادە آنان ابلاغ شد.

جابر آلبوشوکه، فوق دیپلم کامپیوتر و سرباز وظیفه، 28 ساله -مختار آلبوشوکه، شاغل در یک شرکت سنگ شکن، 26 ساله -هادی راشدي، فوق‌لیسانس شیمی کاربردی و دبیر شیمی، 39 ساله -هاشم شعبانی‌نژاد، دبیر ادبیات عرب و دانشجوی کارشناسی ارشد علوم سیاسی دانشگاه اهواز، 32 ساله و -محمدعلی عموری نژاد، مهندس شیلات و معلم مدرسه، 34 ساله، همگی از اعضای فعال موسسه علمی-فرهنگی الحوار (گفتگو) کە مقابل خشونت است، بوده اند که در بهمن و اسفند 1389 دستگیر شدند. محمدعلی عموری نژاد در آن زمان در زندان بصره عراق بسر می‎برد و در بهمن ماه 1389 از مرز شلمچه مستقیما به مقامات اطلاعات جمهوری اسلامی ایران تحویل داده شد. متهمان این پرونده پس از اینکه ماه‌ها در بازداشتگاه وزارت اطلاعات تحت شکنجه شدید بوده‌اند، به محاربه و انجام عملیات تروریستی متهم شدند. این در حالی است که تمامی فعالان یاد شده، در جلسه دادگاه اعلام کرده‌اند اعترافاتی که از آنان اخذ شده تحت شکنجه بوده و به هیچوجه صحت ندارد.

عربهای اهوازی، یکی از اقلیت‌های اتنیکی هستند که تحت شدیدترین انواع سرکوب از سوی دولت مرکزی هستند. در ماه ژوئن سال گذشته، چهار فعال عرب اهوازی که سه تن از آنان برادر بودند نیز با اتهامات مشابه، اعدام شدند.

علاوە بر 5 تن یاد شدە در بالا کە احکام اعدام آنها قریب الوقوع است، در حال حاضر بیش از 30 زندانی وابستە به گروەهای اتنیکی و مذهبی در زیر حکم اعدام هستند.

Joint Statement: Halt the Execution of Ahwazi Arabs

Iran Human Rights, January 23, 2013: 30 human rights bodies released a joint statement today expressing "deep concern" about the imminent execution of five Ahwazi Arab activists and have urged the international community and human rights organizations to take immediate action.

HALT EXECUTION OF AHWAZI ARABS

The undersigned human rights organizations strongly oppose the death sentences issued by the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) against five civil society activists who are members of the Ahwazi Arab ethnic minority in Iran. We urge the IRI authorities to halt the implementation of the death sentences against these five men pending further review of their cases in accordance with due process standards.

On Friday, January 18, five Ahwazi Arabs from Khalafiyeh (Ramshir), Iran were transferred by security forces from Karoun prison to an undisclosed location. Their families fear that the removal of the five men from Karoun prison indicates that they will soon be executed.

These five Ahwazi Arabs activists were sentenced to death in June. The execution sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court, and the families of the men were subsequently notified on Wednesday, January 9, 2013.

The five men in question are: Jaber Alboshoka, holds an associate degree in computer sciences and is a private in the military, 28 y/o - Mokhtar Alboshoka, works at a stone mining company, 26 y/o, - Hadi Rashedi, holds a masters degree in applied chemistry and is a chemistry teacher, 39 y/o -Hashem Shabaninejad, an Arabic literature teacher and a masters student of political science at Ahwaz University, 32 y/o and - Mohammad Ali Amourinejad, a Fisheries engineer and school teacher, 34 y/o. In addition to their professional vocations, these five men are founders and active members of the Al-Hiwar (dialogue)—scientific-cultural institute -a group which experienced mass arrests of its members in February 2011. Mohammad Ali Amourinejad was imprisoned in Basra, Iraq at the time. He was transferred directly to Iranian custody at the Shalamcheh border between Iraq and Iran in February 2011. After being held at a detention center run by the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) in Ahwaz and tortured for months, they were accused of moharebeh (waging war on God) and terrorism, however the defendants maintain that the confessions obtained from them are false confessions obtained under torture.

Among ethnic minorities in Iran, Ahwazi Arabs are subjected to some of the most severe repression from the central government. In June of last year, four Ahwazi Arabs, three of whom were brothers, were executed on similar charges.

In addition to these five men, whose execution is imminent, there are more than 30 prisoners on death row who are members of ethnic and religious minorities in Iran.

The Iranian judiciary and security apparatus recently carried out the execution of six Sunni prisoners in secret—which has prompted fears among prisoners on death row and their families that more executions of ethnic and religious minority prisoners are on the way. The undersigned wish to express their deep concern about the imminent execution of these five Ahwazi Arab activists. We urge the international community and human rights organizations to take immediate action to halt the execution of these five men.

URGENT: Three Prisoners Scheduled To Be Hanged Publicly In Southern Tehran Tomorrow

Iran Human Rights, January 16: According to reliable sources n Iran, three prisoners are scheduled to be hanged in public in Pakdasht (25 kilometers south of Tehran). Two of the prisoners are identified as Siyavash and Mahmood.

One of the prisoners (siyavash) has reportedly slit his wrist to avoid being executed tomorrow. He was taken with the other prisoners for execution tomorrow. Two of the prisoners are from Rajai Shahr Prison while the third prisoner is from Varamin Prison.

Earlier today six people were hanged in three different cities in Iran. One of the prisoners was hanged in public (above picture). One of the prisoners, who was executed in Rajai Shahr Prison today, was a possible juvenile offender.

Urgent: Kurdish Political Prisoners Zanyar and Loghman Moradi in Imminent Danger of Execution

Iran Human Rights, January 6. 2013: Reports from Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj (west of Tehran) indicate that Kurdish political prisoners, Zanyar and Loghman Moradi, who are on death row, may be in imminent danger of execution.

Reliable sources in Iran say the prisoners were given a form today with questions from the Prosecutor's office. One of the questions in the form read, “What is the reason your death sentence has not yet been implemented?”

The same sources also say that Marivan's Friday Prayer Imam has travelled to Tehran and was asked about the implementation of Zanyar and Loghman's death sentences.

Loghman and Zanyar Moradi were sentenced to death on 22 December 2010 by branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of murdering the son of Marivan's Friday prayer Imam. According to a statement by Ahmad Shaheed, the UN Special Rapporteur for the human rights in Iran issued in March 2012, “Zanyar and Loghman Moradi were compelled to confess to allegations of murder after being severely beaten and threatened with rape.” The statement also says: "… no evidence or witnesses were brought against these men, and that they did not have reasonable access to their legal counsel.”

Human rights groups are particularly concerned about the possible execution of political prisoners after six Kurdish prisoners, belonging to a Salafi group, were executed last week.

Iran Human Rights (IHR) is strongly concerned that Zanyar and Loghman Moradi may be in imminent danger of execution. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of IHR said: “Reports of a questionnaire issued to Zanyar and Loghman from the Prosecutor's office and the presence of Marivan's Friday Prayer Imam in Tehran are disturbing and indicate that these two political prisoners may be in imminent danger of execution. The situation is especially serious since six Kurdish Salafi prisoners were executed last week. Also, we have received unconfirmed reports that several political prisoners may be executed in the near future.” Amiry-Moghaddam continued: “We urge human rights NGOs, the UN, and all countries with diplomatic ties with Iran to use all their channels to stop the execution of these prisoners.”

سازمان حقوق بشر ایران، 8 نوامبر: منابع موثق در ایران گزارش داده اند ستار بهشتی، وبلاگ نویس، اخیرا در اثر شکنجه شدید در بازداشتگاه درگذشته است.

ستار بهشتی، 35 ساله، نویسنده وبلاگی به نام "زندگی من برای ایران من"، در 30 اکتبر توسط پلیس فتا، پلیس سایبری ایران، دستگیر شد. اتهام وی "اقدام علیه امنیت ملی از طریق فعالیت های اینترنتی" عنوان شده است. در تاریخ 6 نوامبر به خانواده بهشتی اعلام شد که به منظور تحویل جنازه ستار بهشتی به مراکز ذیربط مراجعه کنند.

جسد این وبلاگ نویس 7 اکتبر در قبرستان رباط کریم تهران به خاک سپرده شد. جسد وی قبل از دفن توسط حداقل یک شاهد عینی رویت شده است. با توجه به شهادت این فرد، زخم هایی بر روی بدن ستار از جمله بر روی قسمت هایی از پا و زانو قابل مشاهده بوده است. این شاهد عینی همچنین تایید کرده که علامت های کبودی بر سر و صورت وی مشاهده کرده است. به گفته خانواده بهشتی، وی پیش از دستگیری و بازداشت در سلامت کامل به سر می برد.

گزارش های منابع متعدد حاکی از آن است ستار بهشتی یک روز پس از دستگیری به بند 350 زندان اوین منتقل شده و در آنجا شکایتی علیه بازجویان خود تنظیم و در آن تاکید کرده است که او بدون حکم قضایی بازداشت شده و بازجویان او را مورد شکنجه قرار داده اند. بهشتی در شکایت خود به ذکر شکنجه های وارده از جمله بستن به میز و لگد زدن به سر و... پرداخته است.

گزارش های رسیده خاطرنشان می کنند که صدمات وارده بر این وبلاگ نویس ناشی از موارد دیگر شکنجه از جمله آویزان شدن از مچ دست نیز بوده است. بهشتی پیش از انتقال به مکانی نامعلوم، در شب اول نوامبر در درمانگاه زندان اوین بستری شده بود.

سازمان حقوق بشر ایران (IHR) خواستار تحقیق فوری "گزارشگر ویژه سازمان ملل متحد در خصوص شکنجه" بر روی "مرگ ستار بهشتی و ارائه گزارش در مورد استفاده گسترده از شکنجه در زندانهای ایران" است.

محمود امیری مقدم، سخنگوی سازمان حقوق بشر ایران گفت: "همه گزارش ها نشان می دهد که آقای ستار بهشتی بر اثر شکنجه در زمانی که در بازداشت به سر می برده درگذشته است". وی افزود: "شکنجه حین بازجویی امری رایج در بازداشتگاه های ایران است و تعداد زندانیانی که در اثر شکنجه جان خود را از دست می دهند بسیار بیشتر از تعداد موارد گزارش شده توسط رسانه ها و یا سازمان های حقوق بشری است". امیری مقدم ادامه داد: "رهبران ایران باید در خصوص استفاده گسترده از شکنجه در زندان ها پاسخگو باشند."

بر اساس منابع موثق، در زندان های ایران اغلب از پزشکان خواسته می شود که گزارش های نادرست، از جمله "استعمال بیش از حد مواد مخدر"، از علت مرگ زندانیانی که زیر شکنجه جان خود را از دست می دهند صادر کنند.
