Rajai Shahr Prison Execution Toll Rises to Eight

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); July 1, 2022: Following news of the execution of four men on rape charges in Raja Shahr Prison on June 29, official sources have reported the execution of four other men on murder charges at the prison that day.

According to Rokna, four men were executed in Rajai Shahr Prison on June 29. Sentenced to qisas(retribution-in-kind) for murder, their identities have not been revealed in the report.

Iran Human Rights previously reported the execution of four men for rape charges at the prison that day, increasing the number of executions to eight for that day.

Official sources have not reported the execution of the four men for rape.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 183 people were executed on murder charges in 2021. Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.
