URGENT: Juvenile Offender Scheduled for Execution in Southwestern Iran Tomorrow
Iran Human Rights, September 23: According to reliable sources in Iran, a juvenile offender is scheduled for execution tomorrow in Ahwaz’s Karoun Prison (southwestern Iran).
The prisoner, Maher Ayashi, is sentenced to death for reportedly murdering another juvenile during a street fight when he was 17 years and 10 months old. According to sources in Iran, Maher Ayashi is in his twenties now.
Iran has ratified the UN convention on the Rights of the Child, which bans the death penalty for offences committed under 18 years of age. However, Iranian authorities continue their practice of executing juvenile offenders.
Iran Human Rights (IHR) urges the international community to do what they can to save Maher Ayashi’s life. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of IHR said: "This execution sentence is a clear violation of Iran’s international obligations. We urge all countries who have diplomatic ties with Iran to use all their channels to stop this execution. The United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon in particular must intervene, because the UN is hosting the Iranian President this week."
