Mohammad Latif, a minor offender,  will not be executed

Iran Human Rights, February 19: Mohammad Latif (18) whose death sentence had been approved by the supreme court, will not be executed, reported the state run Fars news agency. Mohammad Latif was convicted of a murder when he was 14 years and 11 months old, and was about to be executed soon. But according to his lawyer, Mohammad Mostafaei, the family of the offended agreed to forgive Mohammad Latif unconditionally, said the report.

It means that Mohammad Latif will not be executed, but it is not yet known what his sentence will be.

Iran has ratified teh UN convention on the rights of the children which has forbidden death penalty for the offences committed at under 18 years of age.

According to the islamic penal codes, the boys can not be sentenced to death for offences committed under 15 years of age. The fact that Mohammad Latif was 14 years and 11 months old, when he allegedly committed the crime, was a violation of both international as well Sharia law which Iran claims to be committed to.
