At least 21 people were executed in Iran in the month of April 2008

12 May 08

Iran Human Rights, May 11: At least 21 people have been executed in different Iranian prisons in the month of April 2008.

These numbers are only based on the executions announced by the official Iranian media. We have not included one execution in the city of Qom. This case was announced in advance by the government newspaper Iran, few hours prior to the scheduled execution. We have not seen any report saying the execution was postponed. However since the news of the execution was not announced in the official media, it is not included in the monthly report.

Another case not included in this report is the execution of Mr. Fathollah Hematian who was reported by the Iranian activists for human rights and democracy.

According to the report Mr. Hematian was executed in the central prison of Yasooj (Yasoj) in western part of Iran in mid April.

We must underline that not all executions are announced by the Iranian judiciary and Iranian media. The real number of executions is believed to be highr than the numbers announced in this report.
