2 Jul 08

Iran Human Rights, July 2: According to the official Iranian media, at least 18 people were executed in the month of June 2008 in Iran. All of them were executed by hanging inside the prisons.

Among those executed there was at least one minor. Mohammad Hassanzadeh, who was hanged in the prison of Sanandaj, was 16 years and 11 months old at the time of execution. He was convicted of a murder he allegedly committed when he was 14 years and 11 months old.

It is important to note that these numbers include only those executions which have been announced by the official Iranian media. However, we believe the real numbers are much higher.

Three men were scheduled to be executed in the prison of Ahvaz on June 18.

, but the executions have not yet been confirmed. They are not included in the list of the executions yet.

At least three other minors were scheduled to be executed in the month of June, but their execution was postponed to the month of July, after orders from the head of the Iranian judiciary. It is believed that the increasing international focus on the execution of the minors was the reason whey these executions were postponed.

UN, EU and some other governments and politicians, such as president of the Norwegian Parliament, had urged Iranian authorities to stop execution of the minors.
