The death sentence of the minor offender Hossein Toranj has been approved by the Iranian supreme court

Iran Human Rights, November 22: Iranian supreme court has approved the death sentence of Hossein Toranj, convicted of an alleged murder when he was 17 years old.

This was reported by Hossein’s lawyer Mr. Mostafaei, and the Iranian daily newspapers Kargozaraan and Etemaad.

According to Hossein’s lawyer, the murder was an accident and Hossein was acting in self defence.

Hossein was previosly sentenced to death by a court in Tehran but the verdict was overturned by the judiciary under suspicion of that it was happened in self defence.

The case was sent to another court which sentenced Hossein to murder. the murder has now been approved by the Iranian supreme court and sent further to the section for implementation of the verdict.

Hossein is one of the more than 150 minor offenders on the death row in Iran.

Iran has ratified UN’s convention for the rights of the child which bans death penalty for offences committed as a minor. Despite this , Iran is one of teh few countries executing minors. So far in 2008, at least 7 minor offenders have been executed in Iran.
