Iran: Prisoner Hanged in Public

Iran Human Rights (Nov 17 2017): A prisoner was hanged in public in Babol (Northern Iran) on murder charges.

According to the human rights news agency, HRANA, on the morning of Monday November 13, a prisoner was hanged in public in Babol (a city in Mazandaran Province). The prisoner, identified as Abbas B., 28, was sentenced to death on the charge of murdering a young man during a street fight.

The report mentions that efforts were made to win the consent of the plaintiffs until the last minute, but it was unsuccessful and the execution was carried out.

Although the execution was carried out in public a few days ago, the Iranian state-run media have not announced it so far.

According to Iran Human Rights annual report on the death penalty 33 people have been executed in public in front of large crowds including children in 2016. Public executions have been strongly criticized by Iranian human rights activists and sociologists.
