Iran: One Prisoner Scheduled To Be Executed

Iran Human rights (Sep 5, 2018): A prisoner was transferred to the solitary confinement of Zahedan Central Prison. The prisoner is sentenced to death on murder charges.

According to a close source, on the morning of Wednesday, September 5, a prisoner was transferred to the solitary confinement of Zahedan Central Prison. The prisoner, sentenced to death on murder charges, is identified as Mehdi Sarani.

It should be noted that on the morning of Monday, September 3, three prisoners were executed at Zahedan Central Prison. The prisoners were sentenced to death on the charge of “Moharebeh and armed conflict”. The state-run media have not announced the executions so far.

Human rights activists believe that a lack of classification of murder by degree is the reason why the number of executions on murder charges in Iran is very high. According to Iran’s law, any kind of murder regardless of intensity and intent is punished by death. In the death penalty, a member of the victim’s family is responsible for carrying out the execution which can lead to an increase in violence in a society.
