Iran Human Rights November 5: According to a report from the state-run Fars news agency, Sina Paymard’s death sentence is finally cancelled and he will not be executed.

Sina Paymard was sentenced to death for a murder of another youth in a fight, when he was 16 years old. His death sentence was finally "cancelled" this morning after the family of the victime had recieved 150 million tuman ($ 160000) blood money.

The Fars news agency reports that Sina was 19 at the age of conviction of the crime. But it is known that Sina was 16.

Sina’s family, and privat donors managed to collect the blood money in July. But the sentence was not changed until today.

His case will now be reconsidered and a new sentence will possibly be issued.

Background from Amnesty Internationl:

Sina Paymard, a musician, was sentenced to qesas (retribution) for the 2004 murder of a drug dealer during a fight.....That day, he was taken to the gallows to be hanged. His last request was to play the ney, a Middle Eastern flute. Relatives of the murder victim, who were there to witness the hanging, were so moved by his playing that they granted him a last-minute reprieve, and agreed to accept payment of diyeh (blood money) instead of retribution by death. His execution was postponed for two months, while it was referred to conciliation in order to allow both families to negotiate over the payment of diyeh. more..
