Iran Executions: Man Hanged at Sanandaj Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHR); April 28, 2019: A prisoner was hanged for murder charges at Sanandaj prison this morning.

According to IHR sources, Ahmad Irani was the name of the executed prisoner who was sentenced to death for killing two people during a gang fight 8 years ago. At the time of the incident, two groups of people fought over a piece of land in Marivan city.

One of Ahmad’s relatives told IHR, “They have invited Ahmad to come to some place to solve their problems. However, they attacked him and he responded by his weapon. Two people were killed during the fight.”

During the past few weeks, civil activists tried their best to win the consent of the plaintiffs but they failed. According to the Iranian Islamic Penal Code (IPC) murder is punishable by qisas which means “retribution in kind” or retaliation. In this way, the State effectively puts the responsibility of the death sentence for murder on the shoulders of the victim’s family. In qisas cases, the plaintiff has the possibility to forgive or demand diya (blood money).
