Iran: Imprisoned Civil Activist Zartosht Ahmadi-Ragheb on Hunger Strike

Iran Human Rights (IHR); September 17, 2019: Iranian imprisoned civil activist Zartosht Ahmadi-Ragheb has been on hunger strike since his arrest on August 27, 2019.

“His family and relatives are deeply concerned about his health condition. Zartosht has been allowed to call home only two times. At the time of the second call, he could hardly talk,” a source close to the Ahmadi-Ragheb family told IHR, “neither his family nor his lawyer has been able to meet with him in person so far. Authorities don’t reveal any information about the reason for Zartosht’s arrest, the possible charges raised against him and his health condition.”
Zartosht Ahmadi-Ragheb was arrested by the security forces on 27 August 2019. Security forces have also seized all of his family members’ cell phones.
“They did not tell us the reason for Zartosht’s arrest. He could only call on the same night to tell us he is held at ward 209 of Evin prison,” a relative told IHR.
Zartosht Ahmadi-Ragheb is one of the 14 activists who wrote a letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and demanded his resignation. More than half of the signatories of the letter are arrested by the security forces so far.
Zartosht is a human rights activist and abolitionist who has previously been arrested and imprisoned several times. He was an employee of Tehran Fire Department for 17 years before he was fired from his job for his civil activities.
