Iran: Imprisoned Civil Activist Arash Sadeghi in Critical Condition

Iran Human Rights (IHR); October 29, 2019: Imprisoned human rights defender Arash Sadeghi, who developed a post-operative infection following a surgical procedure related to chondrosarcoma in his right shoulder in September 2018 is in critical condition now. He cannot move his arm.

“After his surgery in September 2019, Arash got a post-opertarive infection but has not been sent to a hospital for further treatment. Now, he cannot move one of his hands at all. His condition is getting worse and worse. He was scheduled to be sent to a hospital but the authorities cancelled the appointments three times in a row without any explanation,” one of Arash's relatives told IHR.
The source added that Arash refused to wear the prison outfit as a condition for sending him for treatment. His hand must be scanned for monitoring a possible recrudesce of the tumour after the surgery.
Iran Human Rights (IHR) once again warns about his critical condition and urges the judicial authorities to allow Arash Sadeghi to be transferred to a hospital outside the prison immediately.
IHR also calls on the international community to give special attention to Arash and other imprisoned human rights defenders in Iran.
“Arash is in a critical condition and lack of access to proper medical care could lead to his death,” IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam had previously said, “Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the head of Iranian Judiciary Ebrahim Raeisi are responsible for Arash Sadeghi’s health.”
Arash Sadeghi was first arrested on July 9, 2009, along with some other students who were protesting the results of the controversial 2009 presidential election. After 90 days he was released on bail. He was arrested on May 2014 and was released after six months on a bail of 600 million Tomans. When he was out of prison, the agents of the Ministry of Intelligence rushed into his house causing his mother to have a heart attack and passed away.

Arash was eventually arrested in June 2016 for the last time and was transferred to Evin prison to serve a 19-year prison term. He went on a hunger strike for 70 days in November 2016 and was transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison in October 2017.
