Imprisoned Human Rights Defender, Narges Mohammadi: Poor Health Condition and Life Threats in Prison

Narges Mohammadi who was arrested for her human rights activities on May 5, 2015, has been sentenced to a sum of 16 years jail term for her human rights activities (Minimum of 10 years must be served). She has been arrested several times before that but every time continued her activities in prison. 
Following the brutal crackdown of the protests in Iran in November 2019, Narges raised her voice in prison against the killing of the protesters. Consequently, she was beaten and exiled to Zanjan prison. Her lawyer Mahmood Behzadi-Rad told Kalemeh website that Narges is threatened in Zanjan prison by a death row prisoner who is sentenced to death for killing three people. “My client is sacred. She even requested to be transferred to solitary confinement,” he said.
Narges Mohammadi is suffering from several health problems. Being in the risk group, she must be released from prison, especially during the Novel Coronavirus epidemic in Iran. According to the Islamic Republic’s official announcement, authorities offered furlough to more than 100 thousand prisoners recently. However, Narges Mohammadi and many other prisoners of conscience have not been given the furlough. 
Narges Mohammadi has been in prison since May 2015. She was sentenced to 16 years in prison at Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, including 10 years for establishing the anti-death penalty campaign "LEGAM". The court considered her cooperation with this peaceful campaign, which only aims at stopping the death penalty, as “gathering and colluding against national security”. She was sentenced to five years in prison on the charge of “assembly and collusion with intent to commit a crime against national security” and to one year on the charge of “propaganda against the state”. She is eligible to be released after 10 years in prison.
During the past five years, Narges has only been given furlough for three days.
