Iran: Two International Prize-Winning Students Beaten and Arrested for Unknown Reason

Iran Human Rights (IHR); April 22, 2020: Two students from Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology and former national and international Olympiad winners were beaten up and detained by Revolutionary Guards on April 10.

On 10 April 2020, the Revolutionary Guards arrested Ali Younesi, a second-year Computer Engineering student, and Amir Hossein Moradi, second-year Physics student. The agents confiscated their personal belongings such as phones and laptops, without showing an arrest warrant or stating any reason.

"Ali was injured when the agents brought him home to collect his belongings. They had beaten him at the time of arrest," Ali Younesi's brother told IHR.

It is believed that they have been held in solitary confinement at Tehran's Evin prison, and their cases are reviewed by inquisitor Jafari Nasab at section 6 Evin court. However, the students' families have received no answer to their questions or the reason for their arrest.

Ali Younesi has been awarded a gold medal in International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2018 (IOAA 2018 in China). He has also won a silver medal in National Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad 2017, gold medal in National Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad 2018 in Iran. Amir Hossein has won a silver medal in National Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad 2018.
