Prisoner Taher Bagheri Transferred for Execution in Ardebil

Iran Human Rights (IHR); January 6, 2020: A prisoner sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, has been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for his execution at Ardabil Central Prison.

According to Iran Human Rights, a death row prisoner was transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for his execution in the afternoon of Tuesday, January 5. His identity has been established as Taher Bagheri, who was sentenced to qisas on murder charges.

An informed source has told IHR: “Taher Bagheri killed the man who was harassing his sister. Three months ago, he was transferred for execution but had managed to buy more time but was unsuccessful in changing their minds.”

According to Iran Human Rights’ annual report, at least 225 of the 280 of those executed in 2019 were charged with "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
