Baluch prisoner Anvar Narouyi Executed in Isfahan

Iran Human Rights (IHR); January 28, 2021: Baluch prisoner Anvar Narouyi, who was sentenced to death on drug-related charges, has been executed in Isfahan Central Prison.

According to Iran Human Rights, a male prisoner was executed at Isfahan Central Prison in the early hours of this morning, January 28. The prisoner whose identity has been established as Anvar Narouyi, son of Mohmmad, was sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

Informed sources told IHR: “Anvar Narouyi was arrested for carrying 50 kilograms of methamphetamines and his co-defendant was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment as an accessory.”

At the time of writing, Anvar Narouyi’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 20 Baluch prisoners were executed in Mashhad, Zahedan and Isfahan Central Prisons since 19 December 2020, with four executed on political and security charges.

There has been a dramatic drop in drug-related executions since a new article was added to the Anti-Drugs Law around three years ago. The amendment, which was passed into law in 2017, specifically restricts the death penalty and provides a degree of reduction in some drug-related cases.
