Iran: Zahra Esmaili and 6 Unidentified Male Prisoners Executed in Rajai Shahr Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHR); February 17, 2021: Seven prisoners, including one woman, have been executed in Rajai Shahr Prison. All prisoners appear to have been sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

According to Iran Human Rights, six men and one woman were executed at Rajai Shahr Prison in the early hours of this morning. The six male prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for the executions on February 15, as part of a group of 10 prisoners.

The other four prisoners were returned to their cells after obtaining a stay of execution. The identities of the six executed prisoners have not been established at the time of writing.

The executed female prisoner’s identity has been established as Zahra Esmaili. She had been on death row for murder and transferred from Qarchak Prison for her execution.

An informed source told IHR: “Zahra Esmaili was sentenced to qisas for the murder of her husband. Her husband was in law enforcement and had subjected her to various forms of abuse.”

None of the seven executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
