Political Prisoners Seriously Injured and at Risk After Attack in Greater Tehran Penitentiary

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); October 8, 2021: A number of Greater Tehran Penitentiary political prisoners have sustained injuries after being physically attacked by violent crime prisoners today.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a number of political prisoners were attacked by violent crime prisoners in the 2nd Brigade of the Greater Tehran Penitentiary.

“Shapour Ehsanirad, Pouya Ghobadi, Esmail Gerami, Akbar Bagheri and Akbar Shirazi were seriously injured and Pouya Ghobadi, Akbar Bagheri and Akbar Shirazi had to be transferred to the prison infirmary,” informed sources told IHRNGO.

Prior to this latest attack, the political prisoners had  complained about the lack of security and requested to be transferred to another ward in their meetings with prison officials.

It is not the first time that political prisoners have been physically attacked by violent crime prisoners, which in some cases, have been instigated by prison officials. Such attacks have also previously led to murder. On 10 June 2019, two violent prisoners attacked and murdered political prisoner Alireza Shirmohammadali in Fashafuyeh prison. Alireza had been arrested in the August 2018 nationwide protests and sentenced to eight years imprisonment. He had gone on a hunger strike in protest to the lack of security and the inhumane conditions at the prison prior to his murder.
