Unnamed Husband and Wife Executed in Yasuj

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); November 25, 2021: An unnamed couple sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, were executed in Yasuj Central Prison.

According to Rokna, a husband and wife were executed in Yasuj Central Prison on November 23. Not named in the report, they were sentenced to qisas for two murders.

The province’s Public and Revolutionary Court Prosecutor, Seyed Ali Malek Hosseini said: “Though one of the defendants cited his wife’s inappropriate relationship with the two murdered individuals, even claiming that his motive for committing the two murders was that relationship, no evidence was found by judicial investigations to substantiate this claim.”

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
