URGENT: Iran Human Rights Calls on International Community to Stop Bloody Crackdown of Isfahan Protests

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); November 26, 2021: Peaceful protests against the government’s mismanagement of the water crisis in Isfahan have been met with a bloody violent crackdown since early this morning.

Stressing the Islamic Republic’s history of bloody repressions against protesters, Iran Human Rights expresses grave concern and urges the international community to immediately respond to stop the state repression and killing of defenceless civilians. Recalling that the Islamic Republic cut the internet during the November 2019 nationwide protests before massacring at least 1500 protesters on the streets and arresting and torturing thousands more, Iran Human Rights warns of the internet being cut off again to conceal evidence of the current human rights breaches being committed in Isfahan.

“The United Nations, European Union and every democratic member state with diplomatic and economic relations with Iran must defend the Iranian people’s right to protest and use every available channel to stop the Islamic Republic’s bloody repression. The police and security forces should remember that shooting at protesters with live ammunition is an international crime and its perpetrators will be held accountable,” said Iran Human Rights Director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam.

Isfahani farmers began protesting the government’s mismanagement of the water crisis and their demands being ignored by setting up tents in Zayandeh river’s dry banks and next to the Khajou bridge on November 8. Their numbers reached the thousands when people came out in support of the farmers on November 19.

Yesterday, security forces attacked the protest sight and set the farmers tents on fire to prevent further protests from forming today. Security forces began the day today with a bloody crackdown using batons, tear gas, and pellet and live ammunition.

Iran Human Rights once again warns against the repetition of the bloody crackdown of the December 2016/January 2017, August 2018 and November 2019 nationwide protests and reiterates that the international community’s silence will be considered a green light to continue their killing of innocent protesters by Islamic Republic authorities.
