Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO): December 9, 2021: Three men and three women were executed on drug-related charges in Kerman Central Prison this morning. At least 116 prisoners, including five women, have been executed on drug-related charges in Iranian prisons in 2021 compared to 25 in 2020.

According to Hal Vash, six people were executed in Kerman Central Prison on December 9. Half were Baluch men whose identity have been reported as Khaled Shehbakhsh, Saeed Dehmardeh and Gholam Barahouyi who were all from Sistan and Baluchistan province and on death row for drug related offences.

According to the report, the other three were also sentenced to death for drug offences and may have been women.

At the time of writing, none of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020. However, at least 116 people have so far been executed on the same charge in 2021.

On May 3, IHR published a report on the death penalty in the first four months of 2021 expressing concern at the significant increase in the number of drug-related executions and continues to warn of the continuation of this trend.
