Ali Nehtani Executed on Drug Charges in Ghaen

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 15, 2021: Baluch Ali Nehtani was executed on drug-related charges in Ghaen Prison (South Khorasan province). At least 118 prisoners, including five women, have been executed on drug-related charges in Iranian prisons in 2021 compared to 25 in 2020.

According to Hal Vash, a Baluch man was executed in Ghaen Prison on the morning of December 15. His identity has been reported as 30-year-old Ali Nehtani (Nourzehi), who was on death row for drug-related offences.

Ali was a trainee bus driver on the Zahedan-Mashhad route when he was arrested on the drug charges in 2019 and sentenced to death.

At the time of writing, Ali’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020. However, at least 118 people have so far been executed on the same charge in 2021.

On December 10, Iran Human Rights warned again of the rise in drug-related executions, which is now at a four-year record high and called on the international community for a prompt reaction.
