Unnamed Man Executed for Rape in Yasuj

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 2, 2022: An unnamed man on death row for rape, was executed in Yasuj Central Prison just a year after his arrest.

According to state-run ISNA, a man was executed in Yasuj Central Prison on the morning of 30 December 2021. The man who has not been named was sentenced to death for rape.

Seyed Ali Malek-Hosseini, the Yasuj Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor, said: “Last year, a complaint was lodged at the provincial Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office about the rape of a woman. After identifying the suspect and carrying out the legal and judicial proceedings, the verdict was issued in the quickest time possible and the defendant was sentenced to death.

Iran is one of the few remaining countries to issue the death penalty for rape. In cases involving rape, the likelihood of defendants being tortured to force a confession and issuing the death sentence based on the false confession, is very high. At least 12 people were executed on rape charges in 2020, 16 in 2019 and 23 in 2018.
