Mirsoltan Amiri Executed on Drug Charges in Urmia Central Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 27, 2022: 68-year-old Mirsoltan Amiri was executed on drug-related charges in Urmia Central Prison. His son was executed at the prison last summer.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Urmia Central Prison on the morning of January 27. His identity has been established as 68-year-old Mirsoltan Amiri from Ashnavieh who was sentenced to death for drug-related offences.

Speaking to Iran Human Rights, an informed source said: “Mirsoltan Amiri’s son was called Shahriar Amiri and they were sentenced to death as part of the same case. Shahriar was executed in Urmia Prison last summer. They had been behind bars for around five years.”

At the time of writing, Mirsoltan’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020.

On December 10, Iran Human Rights warned again of the rise in drug-related executions, which is now at a four-year record high and called on the international community for a prompt reaction.
