Hassan Jandaghi Transferred for Execution in Rajai Shahr Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); March 10, 2022: Hassan Jandaghi who has been on death row for murder for 20 years, has been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for his execution at Rajai Shahr Prison. He may not have been the only prisoner to be transferred for execution.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, at least one death row prisoner was transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their execution in Rajai Shahr Prison on March 9. Hassan Jandaghi was arrested 20 years ago and sentenced to qisas (retribution in kind) for murder.

The number of prisoners transferred for execution is likely to be higher. Hassan Jandaghi’s execution is scheduled to be carried out in the coming days.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter and no grading, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
