Unnamed Man Executed for Murder of Rangers in Zanjan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); May 23, 2022: Official Iranian media have reported the execution of an unnamed man for the murder of two rangers in Zanjan Central Prison.

Quoting the Zanjan province judiciary, state-run Tasnim has reported the execution of a man in Zanjan Central Prison on May 23. The unnamed man was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for the murder of two rangers in the protected Fileh Khaseh area in Zanjan on 5 April 2021.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 183 people were executed on murder charges in 2021. Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.
