Ladan Molasaeedi Executed for Murder in Qarchak Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); May 25, 2022: Ladan Molasaeedi, a woman sentenced to qisas(retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed in Qarchak Prison today. She is the fifth woman to be executed in 2022.

According to HRANA news agency, a woman was executed in Qarchak Prison on May 25. Her identity has been reported as Ladan Molasaeedi who was sentenced to qisas for murder.

Ladan was transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for her execution last night. She had managed to obtain a two-week extension from the victim’s family when she was last transferred to the gallows.

Ladan Molasaeedi is the fifth woman to be executed in 2022. Iran is one the world’s top executioners of women. In a 12-year report of “Women and the Death Penalty” published on World Day Against the Death Penalty on 10 October 2021, Iran Human Rights provided a comprehensive analysis of the execution of women.

At the time of writing, her execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 183 people were executed on murder charges in 2021. Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.
