Baluch Nourahmad Baranzehi Executed for Drug Charges in Isfahan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 8, 2022: Nourahmad Baranzehi, a Baluch man sentenced to death for drug-related charges has been executed Isfahan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a Baluch man was executed in Isfahan Central Prison on June 7. His identity has been established as Nourahmad Baranzehi who was sentenced to death for drug-related offences.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Nourahmad Baranzehi had been behind bars for around four years on charges of carrying 200 kilograms of drugs and weapons and sentenced to death.”

Hal Vash which first reported news of the execution reported a source saying: “Nourahmad had memorised the Quran in prison which prison authorities ignored and carried out his sentence.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to reports compiled by Iran Human Rights, at least 126 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2021, a fivefold increase compared to drug executions in the previous three years. None of the 2021 drug-related executions were reported by official sources. Data gathered by Iran Human Rights also shows that Baluch prisoners accounted for 21% of all executions in 2021, while only representing 2–6% of Iran’s population.
