Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 26, 2022: Several male prisoners, all of whom have reportedly been sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, have been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, several male prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions on 25 June in Rajai Shahr Prison. The men who have been reportedly sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder are scheduled to be executed on Wednesday, 29 June.

The identity of one of the men has been established as Peyman Mousavi who was transferred from Ward 1 of the prison.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights that around ten men had been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for the gallows.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 183 people were executed on murder charges in 2021. Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.
