Four Men Executed for Rape in Rajai Shahr Prison/Five Obtain Extensions

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 30, 2022: At least four men have been executed on rape charges in Rajai Shahr Prison. Five other men were returned to their cells from the gallows after obtaining extensions in their murder cases.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, four men were executed in Rajai Shahr Prison on June 29. Their identities have been reported as Hamed Alayi, Iman Safavi, Ali Khanbadal and Ali Khangoldi who were all sentenced to death on rape charges.

The four men were transferred to the gallows in a group of nine. The five other men who were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, were returned to their cells after obtaining extensions in their cases.

At the time of writing, none of their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

In cases of rape, there is a high chance of defendants being tortured to make false confessions, which is used to issue death sentences. In Iran is one of the few countries in the world that issues the death penalty for rape. A lot of cases are also rushed without the defendants having access to a lawyer.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 10 people were executed for rape charges in 2021.
