Two men were hanged in public in the southwestern Iranian province of Khuzestan

Iran Human Rights, April 13: According to unofficial sources last week, two men were hanged in public in the towns of Behbehan and Shadegan, in the southwest Iranian province of Khuzestan.

The state run Iranian newspaper Kayhan, confirmed today that two people were hanged in public in the Ghadir square of Behbehan and Shahrdari square of Shadegan. The newspaper that was quoting the Khuzestan prosecutor’s public relations office didn’t give any details about the names or the exact dates of the executions but wrote that the men were convicted of drug trafficking.

According to some of the sources the man who was supposed to be hanged in public in Behbehan, survived the hanging and was later executed inside the prison.

There are some unconfirmed reports about public protests under the execution ceremony. Iran Human Rights has been investigating further details about the public hanging in Behbehan.

According to other sources Iran Human Rights has been in contact with, another man was hanged in public in the town of Shadegan on Wednesday April 8.

Both these men were charged with drug trafficking. The charges have not been confirmed by independent sources and there have been rumours among the people that the man who was hanged in Behbehan had political or security related charges.
