Iran Human Rights Condemns MPs’ Death Penalty Demand for Protesters

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); November 8, 2022: In a statement, 227 of the 290 members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Parliament) called on the Judiciary to issue and carry out the death penalty for protesters. Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, the Head of Judiciary also asked judges to issue sentences more swiftly.

Iran Human Rights strongly condemns the statement by the 227 MPs who it emphasises, represent the oppressive Islamic Republic leaders and not the Iranian people. Director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: “People have the inalienable right to protest. Killing or issuing death sentences against protesters is an international crime. Those calling for such actions are complicit in this crime and must be held accountable.

A part of the statement read in Parliament on November 6, said:  “We, the representatives of this nation, ask all state officials, including the Judiciary, to treat moharebin (those waging war against god) who have used firearms and cold weapons like ISIS to attack people’s life and property in a way that will serve as a lesson as soon as possible and carry out the divine decree against moharebin no matter what uniform they wear or which sector they are from, and issue their qisas sentences (retribution-in-kind for murder) to prove to all that the life, property, security and honour of our dear people is a red line for this government and it will show no leniency to anybody in this regard.

Furthermore, Head of Judiciary, Mohseni-Ejei who has a long track record of human rights violations defended the death penalty for protesters at the Supreme Council’s weekly meeting on November 7.

Thousands have been arrested and many indicted since the nationwide protests began more than 50 days ago.

According to official reports, at least eight protesters are facing security-related charges including moharebeh(enmity against god) which carry the death penalty.

The Islamic Republic has a history of using the death penalty as a political tool of repressing its opposition to maintain power. The lives of Iranian protesters are therefore at serious risk and the international community must stop such atrocities with its timely action.
