At Least 4 Baluch Men Executed in Zahedan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); November 29, 2022: Mohammad Issazehi, Zobeir Barahouyi, Mohammad Amin Omarzehi and Abdolnabi Mazarzehi, four Baluch men sentenced to death for murder and drug-related charges, were executed in Zahedan Central Prison.

According to Hal Vash, a Baluch man was executed in Zahedan Central Prison on November 26. His identity has been reported as 23-year-old Mohammad Issazehi (Totazehi). He was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder committed during a street fight six years ago.

On November 27, another Baluch man was executed at the prison. His identity has been reported as 23-year-old Zobeir Barahouyi (Zirkari) who was arrested for drug-related charges in Kerman around four years ago. He was sentenced to death for the charges by the Revolutionary Court a year later and was held in Zahedan Central Prison since.

Hal Vash has also reported the execution of two other Baluch men on November 28 at the prison. Their identities have been reported as Mohammad Amin Omarzehi (known as Jama) and Abdolnabi Mazarzehi (known as Nour Mohammad).

Mohammad Amin was a father of six children and was arrested for drug-related charges around ten years ago. Abdolnabi was also arrested for the same charges ten years ago. They were both sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court.

Two other Baluch men named as Anoushirvan Omarzehi and Nasser Hemati who had been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions, were returned to their cells after their executions were delayed for unknown reasons.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

At the time of writing, none of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

As of 10 October 2022, at least 428 people including two juvenile offenders and 12 women were executed by the Islamic Republic, an 89% increase compared to the same period last year. At least 180 people including a woman have been executed for drug-related offences since the beginning of the year. This is while 83 people were executed for the charges in the same period in 2021 and 18 in 2020.
