4 Men at Imminent Risk of Execution in Isfahan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); May 18, 2023: Four men were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions in Isfahan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, four men were transferred to solitary confinement yesterday, in preparation for their executions in Isfahan Central Prison. The identities of three of the men who were sentenced to death for drug-related charges have been established as, Yaghoub Hassani, Mazhar Davari and Ali Mehrdel.

The fourth man was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder. His identity has been established as Kazem Ghofrankhah.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Kazem Ghafrankhah had three children and had been behind bars for three years. The other three men were all arrested between 2-3 years ago.”

The four men are scheduled to be executed within hours.

According to the 2022 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 256 people were executed for drug-related offences in 2022, a more than two-fold increase compared to 2021 (126) and ten times more than 2020 (25).
