Majid Jafari and Ali Tabib Executed in Isfahan

Iran Human Rights (IHRGNO); May 24, 2023: Majid Jafair and Ali Tabib were executed for drug-related and murder charges in Isfahan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Isfahan Central Prison on 23 May. Their identities have been established as Majid Jafari and Ali Tabib (photo).

Majid Jafari was sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court. Ali Tabib was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

Informed sources told Iran Human Rights that Majid was behind bars for two years and Ali for three years.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to the 2022 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 582 people were executed in Iran. Of those, 288 were executed for murder charges and 256 for drug-related charges, a more than two-fold increase compared to 2021 (126) and ten times more than 2020 (25).

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.
