Hadi Al-Nasser and Abbas Khanjari Executed in Ahvaz

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); June 19, 2023: Hadi Al-Nasser and Abbas Khanjari were executed for murder charges in Sepidar Prison in Ahvaz.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Sepidar Prison on 19 June. Their identities have been established as 34-year-old Hadi Al-Nasser and Abbas Khanjari. They were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder in the same case.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “The two prisoners were transferred to Sepidar Prison from Sheiban Prison for execution. They were arrested for murder around five years ago and sentenced to qisas. Their bodies were returned to their families post execution and laid to rest in Falahieh city.”

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to the 2022 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 582 people were executed in Iran. Of those, 288 were executed for murder charges.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.
