Mohammad Bagher Bazgir and Sasan Farzipour Executed in Khorramabad

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 30, 2023: Mohammad Bagher Bazgir and Sasan Farzipour, two men sentenced to qisas, were executed in Khorramabad Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Khorramabad Central Prison on 30 September. Their identities have been established as Mohammad Bagher Bazgir and 31-year-old Sasan Farzipour (pictured) who were both sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Mohammad Bagher Bazgir was accused of killing a cleric following an argument two years ago. Sasan Farzipour was also accused of murder in a mass fight at a wedding in Khorramabad five years ago. Sasan maintained that he hadn’t killed anyone and that the real murderer had escaped the wedding venue.”

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

At the time of writing, neither of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
