Protester Milad Zohrevand’s Mother Arrested for “Wailing” at his Securitised Burial in Christian Cemetery

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, protester Milad Zohrevand’s body was laid to rest in a Christian (Armenian) cemetery in Hamedan amidst heavy security presence on 24 November. His mother, Afsaneh Zohrevand was arrested and detained for hours.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Milad was buried in the Armenian cemetery, they didn’t allow him to be buried in a Muslim one. Security forces were present and wouldn’t let anyone take photos and videos. They also didn’t allow them to print notices or distribute dates (per custom). They wouldn’t even permit anyone to cry and wail. His mother was arrested for wailing.”

Milad Zohrevand was a Malayer protester who was arrested on 27 October 2022, the 40 days anniversary of Jina (Mahsa) Amini’s death which sparked protests across Iran. He was secretly executed in Hamedan Central Prison on 22 November 2023.

Milad Zohrevand was the eighth “Woman, Life, Freedom” protester executed. Mohsen Shekari, Majidreza Rahnavard, Seyed Mohammad Hosseini, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Saleh Mirhashemi, Saeed Yaghoubi and Majid Kazemihave all been executed since December 2022.
