Urgent Appeal to Extend Mandates of Independent International Fact-Finding Mission and Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

As members of the United Nations Human Rights Council, I address you with grave concern regarding the ongoing human rights violations in Iran. Despite the commendable efforts of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission and the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of the United Nations, the situation in Iran continues to deteriorate.

The people of Iran are enduring systematic, widespread, and institutionalised human rights violations committed by the Islamic republic of Iran. With the recent surge in protests and social movements, the authorities’ violent repression has escalated, targeting not only political dissidents but also women, religious minorities, and ethnic groups.

For the past 45 years, the Islamic Republic has employed various forms of oppression, discrimination, and violence against its citizens. The "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement illustrates the Islamic Republic's repression of dissent. It is imperative that we, as both citizens of Iran and members of the international community, reassess our approach to effectively address these crimes.

Considering this urgency, I urge the following actions:

1. The mandates of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission and the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights must be extended to allow them to continue their vital work to uncover the full extent of gender apartheid and crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Islamic Republic.

2. The United Nations and human rights organisations worldwide must exert systematic and comprehensive pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran, holding it accountable for its egregious violations of human rights.
