Esmail Fekri and Mohsen Langarneshin at Risk of Execution After Prison Transfer

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); February 19, 2025: Esmail Fekri and Mohsen Langarneshin, two men on death row for espionage, were transferred from Ward 4 of Evin Prison to Ghezelhesar Prison on 15 February, raising concerns of their imminent execution as hangings of prisoners held in Evin are often carried out in Ghezelhesar.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men accused of espionage for Israel in separate cases were transferred from Evin Prison to Ghezelhesar Prison. Arrested over the past two years in separate cases,  Esmail Fekri and Mohsen Langarneshin’s death sentences were recently upheld by the Supreme Court.

In 2023 and 2024, at least 11 people, accused of spying for Israel were executed in Iran. Of those, eight were Kurdish political prisoners whose torture-tainted confessions were aired by state media. The judicial process in the Islamic Republic, particularly for security-related charges, is known for its lack of transparency. Over the past two years, at least eight Kurdish political prisoners were executed on espionage charges, with little known about their cases except for a few forced confessions broadcast on state television.

Espionage charges are under the jurisdiction of the Revolutionary Courts, which are infamous for gross human rights violations and holding trials that last only a few minutes. Defendants are denied access to lawyers during interrogations, and torture is used to extract confessions.
