Iran Human Rights, October 13: According to sources in Iran, the 10 prisoners scheduled to be executed this morning in Tehran’s Evin Prison have been transferred back to Ghezel Hesar Prison.
It is unknown whether their sentences will be reevaluated.
Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of Iran Human Rights (IHR), asks human rights NGOs and the international community to keep the focus on the situation of prisoners at imminent risk of execution. Amiry-Moghaddam said: "Thanks to the increased international attention, these scheduled executions have not been carried out, but there is no indication that the death sentences will be quashed.
IHR and several other human rights NGOs launched urgent calls to stop the executions of at least 10 prisoners scheduled for October 11 before the October 13 postponement.
Three UN experts, among them Ahmed Shaheed, the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, published a statement yesterday urging Iranian authorities to halt the executions and to declare a moratorium on the death penalty.
