Norwegian Government Regrets Execution Of 10 Prisoners In Iran

Iran Human Rights, October 23: Following the execution of Saeed Sedighi and nine other prisoners in Tehran’s Evin prison, the Norwegian government expressed concerns about the widespread use of the death penalty in Iran.

"Norway regrets the execution of ten prisoners this morning", said Deputy Foreign Minister Gry Larsen in a statement that was published on the official website of the Norwegian government.

The ten executed were convicted of drug related crimes, but Norway is concerned about how the judicial process has been carried out, said the statement.

"Norway is a principally against the death penalty. It is particularly disturbing when the death penalty is used in a country like Iran, where the rule of law is so weak ", said the Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister.

In a meeting with the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister yesterday, Norway’s ambassador to Iran conveyed Norwegian concern over the widespread use of the death penalty in Iran, said the report.

Saeed Sedighi and nine other prisoners sentenced to death for drug related charges, were executed yesterday morning in Tehran’s Evin prison. Reports say that several of the prisoners had been subjected to torture and unfair trials.
