One man was executed by the firing squad, and then hanged in Isfahan province early this morning

Iran Human Rights, January 25: One man was executed by the firing squad early this morning, Saturday January 26, in the town of Mobarakeh in Isfahan province, reported the state-run Fars news agency. The man, identified as Reza Sharifi (21) was convicted of sexual abuse of several children according to the report. He was originally from Najafabad another town in Isfahan province , in the central Iran.

The daily newspaper Etemad reported yesterday that Reza Sharifi had confessed to sexual abuse of several children.

He also said in the court that he was subjected to sexualabuse himself, when he was a child. According to the daily, the judges had initially sentenced him to "beheading by sword". But the Supreme Court approved execution by the firing squad.

This is an execution method not used bu the Iranian authorities since beginning of 1980s.

The government newspaper "Iran" and another daily, "Quds" reported about the execution. According to this report, Reza Sharifi’s eyes were covered and he was tied to a coloumn, when the firing squad composed of five soldiers shot at him. His body was then hanged 15 minutes, before it was taken down. The execution took place at a military base between Isfahan and Mobarakeh, Saturday morning 7.30 am local time.
